Kaudulla National Park sits close to Minneriya and shares the same broad dry-zone ecology, centred on an irrigation reservoir whose margins draw elephants and other wildlife as the surrounding water sources shrink through the dry season. The two parks form part of the same elephant corridor, and animals move between them and neighbouring Wasgamuwa depending on where water and grazing are currently best, meaning the choice of which park to visit on a given day is often guided by current conditions rather than a fixed preference.

Kaudulla tends to see fewer visitors than Minneriya, and is frequently recommended by local guides as the better option precisely when Minneriya's tracks are busiest, particularly during the peak elephant-gathering season. The park's own landscape of open grassland around the reservoir, bordered by forest, supports a similar range of wildlife to its neighbour — elephants foremost, alongside deer, water buffalo and a good variety of birdlife around the water's edge.

Safari drives here follow the same open-jeep format used throughout the region, and Kaudulla's proximity to Habarana and Sigiriya makes it an easy addition to a Cultural Triangle itinerary without requiring a significant detour. Many operators will recommend on the day itself whether Minneriya or Kaudulla is currently the stronger choice, based on recent sightings and water conditions.

As with any safari park, wildlife sightings depend on chance and current conditions rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Kaudulla safari drive

Kaudulla National Park is an important wildlife reserve in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province. The park protects dry-zone forest, open grasslands, wetlands and the historic Kaudulla reservoir, creating valuable habitats for elephants and many other animal species.

A jeep safari through the park offers opportunities to observe Asian elephants, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, monkeys, crocodiles, water buffalo and numerous resident and migratory birds. Wildlife sightings vary according to rainfall, water levels, vegetation and natural animal movements.

Kaudulla is particularly well known for seasonal elephant gatherings near the reservoir. Elephants frequently move between Kaudulla, Minneriya and neighbouring forest areas. Therefore, the number and exact location of elephants cannot be guaranteed on any particular day.

Afternoon safaris are often popular because elephants may emerge into the open grasslands as the temperature becomes cooler. Morning safaris can provide quieter conditions, softer light and rewarding birdwatching opportunities.

The safari is conducted in a four-wheel-drive vehicle with an experienced driver or naturalist. Responsible wildlife viewing is essential. Vehicles should maintain a safe distance, avoid surrounding animals and never block an elephant’s route.

Exact entry times, ticket prices and final-entry arrangements may change according to park regulations. Wildlife movements, rainfall and reservoir conditions influence the most suitable safari area. Confirm current park access and recent elephant locations with a responsible safari operator before departure.

Good to knowWear light, comfortable and neutral-coloured clothing. Bring drinking water, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a camera. Protect electronic equipment from dust and sudden rain. Remain inside the safari vehicle unless a park officer gives permission to leave it. Do not feed animals, make loud noises, use flash photography close to wildlife or discard rubbish inside the park. Choose an operator who respects wildlife-viewing regulations. The vehicle must not chase elephants, block their path, approach calves closely or create congestion around a herd. Safari tracks may become dusty during dry weather and muddy or uneven after rain. Elephant gatherings are seasonal, and sightings of particular animals cannot be guaranteed.

AccessibilityThe safari is mainly experienced from a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Passengers normally need to climb one or more high steps to enter the vehicle, which may be difficult for travellers with limited mobility. Wheelchair users should request transfer assistance and discuss suitable vehicle arrangements with the operator before booking. Most safari vehicles do not have built-in wheelchair lifts. The ride can be rough and bumpy because of uneven natural tracks. Travellers with serious back, neck or spinal conditions, recent surgery or conditions affected by vehicle movement should obtain appropriate advice before participating.
