Discover Nuwara Eliya
Sitting at over 1,800 metres above sea level, Nuwara Eliya has a noticeably cooler, often misty climate that sets it apart from almost anywhere else in Sri Lanka, and it was developed by British planters in the nineteenth century partly for exactly that reason. The town still carries visible traces of that era: a golf course, a racecourse, timber-framed buildings, and neatly kept gardens that feel quite different in character from the rest of the island. Around the town, rolling hills are covered in neat rows of tea bushes, and several working tea estates and factories welcome visitors to see how the leaves are picked and processed, usually finishing with a tasting.
The surrounding countryside makes Nuwara Eliya a natural base for exploring the wider hill country: waterfalls, viewpoints and walking trails are all within reach, and it sits conveniently close to Horton Plains National Park for travellers planning an early-morning visit there. Gregory Lake, on the edge of town, offers a pleasant place for a walk and small-boat activities, and the surrounding parks are well used by both visitors and locals, particularly around the cooler evenings.
The temperate climate also supports a noticeably different range of produce than the lowlands — visitors will notice vegetables, strawberries and flowers grown locally that are far less common elsewhere in Sri Lanka, and roadside stalls selling these are a familiar part of the drive into town. The train journey up to Nuwara Eliya (via the nearby Nanu Oya station) is itself considered one of the more scenic rail routes in the hill country, winding through tea country with wide valley views.
Because of the altitude, evenings and early mornings are genuinely cold by Sri Lankan standards, and this is worth planning for rather than discovering on arrival.
